The Children’s Pen writing program for 6th and 7th
graders is intended to help students develop visual and verbal literary
competencies, while enjoying the process of learning to express themselves
through words and images. In
addition to expanding the student’s writing proficiencies, the program
is designed to foster academic performance and communication skills by
exploring four fundamental characteristics of heroes: Endurance,
Sacrifice, Courage, and Compassion.
Students will be asked to write essays on “Who Are Our Heroes?” and
“What Kind of Hero Does Our World Need Today?”
The president of Inkwell Productions, Nick Ligidakis, will
share inspiring excerpts from one of his five published books, “The
Heroes of My Thoughts,” a loving tribute to his Greek parents.
Guest authors, editors, illustrators, typesetters, and printers
will be invited to speak in each classroom about the inner world of book
publishing.
Inkwell
Productions will host an annual
year-end awards ceremony for the students, parents, and teachers of the
winning compositions, which will be published in “An Anthology of
Children’s Heroes.” All
proceeds from the sale of the book will be used for scholarships to Inkwell’s
Summer Writing Camps.
DISTRICT PARTICIPATION AND SCOPE
For the 2002/2003 school year Inkwell Productions is prepared to
take its program into three (3) middle school classrooms per district in
Scottsdale, Phoenix (inner city), and the Reservation(s).
Bringing students together from each school for pre-approved
designated field trips will be an important component to the success of
the program.
Program outlines, materials, and guidance will be provided to
participating schools and teachers for a smooth incorporation into
curriculum planning. Input
from teachers and students will be encouraged throughout the year to build
on a foundation of educational and social relevancy, participation, and
support.
