Forget Me Not
Writing My Way Through Alzheimer’s
By Gloria Marshall
How do you keep
from losing your mind while your husband is losing his?
Alzheimer afflicts
an estimated 12 million people worldwide. By the year 2050, 45 million
may become victims of this horrible illness. This estimate stems from
the increasing number of elderly people, thereby threatening a
worldwide epidemic. At this moment there is no known cure. How do the
relatives of those afflicted with this most common form of dementia
cope?
As a writer, Gloria
Marshall focuses on the clash between fantasy and reality. After a
short stint as a writer for the soap opera “As the World Turns,”
Marshall’s life as the wife of an Alzheimer’s patient had soap opera
quality as she faced dramatic episodes when she visited her husband at
his care facility. Nat, her husband of 55 years, suffered from
Alzheimer for ten agonizing years.
Forget Me Not,
Marshall’s new book, is based on her personal experience coping with
the three stages of Alzheimer. Forget Me Not is a journal
written by someone who, without a script to follow, was forced to
improvise as she went along and tackle the daily tasks a caretaker of
an Alzheimer’s patient has to endure.
When Gloria Marshall
was writing scripts for “As the World Turns,” she was provided with a
breakdown of actions. She would outline grandiose plot plans to
embroider the head writer’s story line and quickly learned she had to
improvise to meet the weekly deadline. Spontaneity was the name of the
game. Deal with the moment. Years later, this prepared her for her
role as caretaker of an Alzheimer patient, where communicating skills,
patience, love, and understanding became the new script she would have
to follow. Gloria Marshall lives in Arizona, where she has resided in
the last 30 years.
FORGET ME NOT is
available through the publisher, Inkwell Productions, LLC and
distributors: Ingram’s and Baker & Taylor. Gloria Marshall is
available for speaking engagements and book signings.
