STANISLAW
By Graham Fitch
“Every new judge when elected
decides his or her cases during the first 10 years on the bench with a
fear that they are making a wrong decision. For the next 10 years,
they decide each case with the conviction that they are absolutely
correct. After they have spent 20 years on the bench they decide each
case with a growing indifference as to whether they are right or wrong
and when it becomes habitual, they retire.”
Stanislaw Stocowski was a lonely
bachelor who lived by himself in an old hotel a few blocks from the
Seattle Public Market. He spent most of his life working as a butcher
at this market, located at the end of Pike Street, in the heart of
downtown Seattle. For over 100 years, farmers, fishmongers, butchers,
florists and artists have sold their wares in open stalls that are
rented from the city by the day, week or year. Stanislaw occupied a
small butcher shop towards the back of the market for nearly 50 years
until his death in 1966.
At the time of Stanislaw’s death, in
December of 1966, Graham Fitch was his attorney. When summoned to his
deathbed by his landlady, Fitch discovered an army footlocker under
the bed of Stanislaw that contained more than $450,000 in U.S.
currency. He had no known heirs. This is the remarkable story of what
happened to Stanislaw’s life savings.
Graham Fitch was born and raised in
Seattle, Washington. He is a third generation Washington Lawyer. The
Fitch family roots are English and Fitch ancestors were among the
first colonial settlers of our country. Fitch attended the University
of Washington, University of Washington Law School and was a
commissioned officer in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the U.S.
Army. He resides with his wife, Coni, in Bellevue Washington, and
still practices law at his downtown Bellevue office.
STANISLAW is available through the
publisher Inkwell Productions, LLC and distributors: Ingram’s and
Baker & Taylor. Graham Fitch is available for speaking engagements as
well as book signings.
